Summary: Newspaper comments on the results of the election in Washington Co. Since the candidates put forth by the Union Party ran unopposed, the turnout of voters was about 700 short of a previous vote. The candidates were considered "of high character for moral and political integrity" and were definitely Union supporters; however, at certain polling places they were badly treated. When voters are dissatisfied with the nominees of the party, they should "work to bring about a better result next time." In general, it was believed better to support the entire ticket than to become involved in "prejudices and dislikes" of individual candidates.

Return of Washington County Soldiers (November 11th, 1863)

Summary: Provisions were made for some Washington County soldiers to return home so they could vote. Men from several companies raised in the county returned - namely those belonging the companies of Capts. Maxwell, Fiery and Yontz, plus members of Col. Maulsby's Regiment, Potomac Home Brigade. The men looked "remarkably well" in spite of the exposure they are subject to. They returned to their camps on Saturday.

The Case of Surgeon E. Kershner (November 11th, 1863)

Summary: Friends of Assistant Surgeon Dr. E. Kershner of Clear Spring, Washington Co. will be pleased that he has been returned to his former naval position on the U. S. Frigate "Ironsides." Previously Dr. Kershner had been arrested by Adm. Dupont, court-martialed, cashiered and sent home for writing a letter to the Baltimore American criticizing officers of the fleet for their actions at Fort Sumter. The verdict of the court-martial was not upheld by the Secretary of the Navy and Dr. Kershner is restored to his previous position.
