Summary: A report of the action of several citizens of Frederick County who encountered 7 guerillas suspected of stealing horses on Catoctin Mountain. Four of the guerillas were captured. The leader, on horseback, and two men on foot got away, but the leader was supposed to be wounded. The captured men were from Baltimore. They gave their names as Lee, Syington, Barrett and Clayton. Three of them indicated they were going "South." They were put in jail in Frederick awaiting action of the grand jury.

Summary: A reminder from the Union Central Committee of the upcoming Primary Meetings in each district of Washington Co. The purpose of the primary meetings is to select delegates to the County Convention to be held Oct. 3. The convention will be selecting candidates for a number of important offices and the paper urges that citizens must take advantage of their ability to attend the primary meetings and continue to have their influence felt and voices heard. "Let there be a general turnout of the loyal voters of each district, so that each may be fairly and properly represented in the Convention."

Summary: Reminder that the Battle of South Mountain took place one year before on September 14th and the Battle of Antietam took place on September 17th. Although at present these anniversaries cannot be properly observed, in the future they will be. Much has changed in a year since the everything was laid waste, crops destroyed and death everywhere. Now the crops are growing again and fences repaired, but "the long rows of graves 'where sleep the brave,' each with its little pine board" are reminders of what took place. "The graves...are the sad monuments of the destruction of human life in those terrible battles."

Summary: The paper urges parents of Hagerstown youngsters to stop their children from playing war games - throwing stones and firing pistols. The children have learned the ways of war and play at it at their own peril and that of others. They even have devised "ambulances" to take away the "wounded." Recently, a boy was shot in one of these games and narrowly escaped death.
