A Dangerous Maxim
Summary
Citizen editorial refuting Examiner's claim that during time of war, "the laws are silent". This refers to recent attack on office of Citizen newspaper, which Examiner did not decry. Citizen editors roundly scold Examiner for not upholding the constitution, calling on early national patriots names who would be ashamed. Citizen includes text of New York Sunday Mercury "When Will the War End?" This part questions the intent of the Lincoln administration and the powers granted to Gen. Hunter to abolish slavery in any state in rebellion.
