The President Visits the Rebel Wounded
Summary
Anecdote from a correspondent for the Cincinnati Commercial about President Lincoln's visit to Rebel wounded near Antietam or South Mtn. Both Lincoln and McClellan treated Confederates with dignity, compassion, shaking hands of wounded soldiers, denying malice toward them, and understanding of circumstances that brought them together as combatants. All present, both Union and Confederate, were moved to tears.
