Stringent Order

Summary

Order issued by Gen. McClellan, due to acts of depredation around Sharpsburg, mandating that any soldiers found outside their camps without permission are to be arrested and kept under guard at Harper's Ferry. McClellan reminds corps commanders that they are occupying a loyal region that looks to them to prevent looting and to preserve order.
