A Startling Development

Summary

Reprinting of a letter sent from Daniel Dechert, former editor and proprietor of the Hagerstown Mail, to an aid of Confederate Gen. Harper, saying that he, Dechert, had "dropped" a map of Washington County to the general, and that he would soon forward a map of Franklin County, PA. The letter from Dechert was written April 31, 1861, and was found in June 1862 by Lieut. A. McLeod, aide-de-camp to Union Brig Gen Crawford. [from Hagerstown Herald]
