Transcript
The 29th Ohio and the remnant of the brave 5th Connecticut Regiment, which have been stationed here for some months past on guard duty, left on Wednesday last, and as rumor says have gone to the front. We cannot part with these regiments, without bearing testimony to their general good conduct and discipline while here. This remark applies particularly to the Fifth Connecticut, which had behaved so splendidly and suffered so severely in the retreat down the valley of Virginia, and afterwards at the battle of Cedar Mountain, and having lost half of their original number by the casualties of war, were sent back here to recuperate the health and energies of the remainder. They are under the command of Major W. W. Parker, in the absence of Col. Chapman, taken prisoner by the Rebels, and not very officially exchanged, and during their sojourn in our midst, made hosts of friends by their orderly deportment and good discipline. These troops have been replaced by the Purnell Legion and Third Delaware Regiment.
