Transcript
REBEL DESERTERS – On Thursday last, two of the Cauleys, residents of Augusta County, Va., were arrested in the near vicinity of this city and lodged in the Guard House by order of Maj. Yellott, Provost Marshal. The following, we learn, were the circumstances leading to the arrests. It appears that the gentlemen, now in confinement, had made their way through the Federal lines sometime last summer, and after subscribing to the usual oath of allegiance, were permitted to go North. Getting tired of their temporary abode in the North, they undertook to work themselves back again into Dixie, but were apprehended about a mile west of this place on the Harper’s Ferry road, and disposed of as above stated. According to the obligations imposed by the oath, their clandestine attempt to escape South involve a liability to the charge of desertion.
