Thankful for Small Favors

Summary

The Examiner dispels the Copperhead belief that the results of the recent election of delegates to the Convention will impede Emancipation.

Transcript

Thankful for Small Favors.
Not a few of our Copperhead friends have given lodgment to the impression that because the Unconditional Union party did not succeed in electing sixty five members to the Constitutional Convention pledged to immediate Emancipation that the Convention was thereby defeated, consequently they manifest considerable joy over what they conceive to be a vain struggle of the Union men to rid Maryland of the incubus of slavery. Truly their cause of rejoicing has its foundation more in imagination than in their wisdom. The legislative enactment calling the Convention together provides that sixty-five members should be duly elected before the Convention could proceed to work. If we mistake not ninety-six have been elected fifty of whom can meet and proceed at the office to discharge the duties assigned them. The friends of Emancipation have triumphantly elected sixty-one members and if the Copperhead faction see proper to stay away, the Convention will be organized, and accomplish its work unembarrassed by the intrigues of traitors and that would be something to rejoice over.
We regret the painful necessity of awakening them up from their dreams and thus interrupt their rejoicing, but we derive consolation from the fact that it is a proper punishment due their vanity, in assuming that all the wisdom of the State is embodied in the rebel brotherhood. The Convention will undoubtedly meet and perform the arduous work developing upon it and that too without the assistance or cooperation of arrogant Rebel sympathizers.
