Transcript

ARREST OF A REBEL OFFICER – Wm. Stokes, a resident of this city up to the time of the breaking out of the rebellion, but since a follower of Jeff Davis, was arrested last week at Mt. Airy partially attired in the rebel uniform. He was conveyed to Baltimore and after a hearing before Maj. Hayner, was sent to Fort McHenry to await a further examination on the charge of being a spy. Mr. Stokes, it seems, had spent about ten days here with his friends, who kept him so effectually concealed as to prevent suspicion, and had his arrest not taken place whilst attempting to rejoin his comrades in rebeldom, the fact of his visit would have been a secret to the public. It will be remembered that this Mr. Stokes was drafted about a year ago and, as he failed to report, it is thought that he ought to be held amenable to the laws on the score of desertion. At all events, we trust the Government will make an example of southern patriots, and not allow them to stalk abroad in our midst unwhipped of justice.
