Supposed Deserter

Summary

Two sons of Mr. John W. Birely were driving a wagon about 3 miles from Frederick when a supposed deserter jumped into the wagon, grabbed the reins and drove the wagon toward Mt. Pleasant. The boys jumped out and gave the alarm. The suspected deserter was captured and brought to the guard house in Frederick City. No explanation was given by the man for his actions and the boys were not hurt.
