Maryland Hospitality - Care of Sick and Wounded Soldiers
Summary
Letter to the Examiner dated August 31, 1863 from soldiers who were cared for by the people of Emmitsburg after the battle at Gettysburg and wanted to express their thanks. Approximately 70 men were in an improvised hospital established in a school and in private homes. Wonderful care was offered by the people of the town and the Drs. Annan who received no compensation from the government. Invalids were offered carriage rides into the country. The care and kindness of the citizens reminded the men of home. The hospital was in existence from July 6 to August 18th. The letter is signed Capt. J. Crepps, Pvt. Cyrus Blue, two sergeants and sixty-six other men. They were apparently from various regiments.
