Primary Meetings

Summary

District meetings of the Unconditional Union voters of Washington County are to be held in order to select 10 delegates from each district for the County Convention. The County Convention will select 6 delegates to the State Convention in Baltimore on October 18th. At the state convention, the party will choose nominees for governor, comptroller, lieutenant governor, states attorney, etc. A good turnout of citizens for the district meetings is important "as these meetings are the original fountains of all political power." There is also part of an article on fighting between Union and Confederate troops in the areas of Martinsburg, Hainesville and Harper's Ferry. The Union troops represented three regiments under the command of Col. Schoonmaker. Fighting went back and forth. At one point the Rebels occupied Martinsburg and advanced toward Hainesville, but later were driven back and heavy firing was heard in the vicinity of Bunker Hill.
