The Rebel Invasion

Summary

Prior to the recent Confederate invasion, citizens had been preparing for it for two weeks, news of which was brought in by refugees and others. On June 20 (1863), the first Confederate cavalry entered town, and the following day about 300 more passed through to Frederick where they skirmished with Capt. Vernon’s cavalry. A squad of 30 came to town the next day, which included a number of Frederick County natives, including Spencer C. Jones, Wm. Pope, Adolphus Fearbake, Sidney Butler and Alexander Hubbard.
