Summary
Last Saturday Gen. Sullivan received a dispatch stating that 500 Confederates were about to cross the river at Shepherdstown and raid Hagerstown. In response, Battery L, 5th U.S. Artillery was stationed in the square, and 500 citizens turned out to picket and patrol the streets. On Sunday morning it was determined that the Confederates had not crossed the river.
