Account of the Rebel Raid Through Middletown Valley
Summary
A local citizen provides an account of the passage of Early’s army through and the occupation of Middletown and the Valley. On July 6 the Confederate horsemen first appeared, with the passage of the main army taking place primarily on July 8. Stores that suffered the greatest losses were Culler & Levy; Wright & Hyatt; and Rudy Winbigler, Herring and Crouse. Town officials had to pay $1,500 to Early.
