A private of the Potomac Home Brigade named Thompson attempted to free 2 prisoners being escorted to jail by Private Doyle of the 3rd Wisconsin Regiment, Provost Guard. Thompson became violent and threatening and drew his pistol on Doyle who shot him in the breast and killed him. During the affair, the prisoners escaped. Doyle reported the event to the Guard House. A court martial exonerated Doyle of all charges and there has been no further investigation by civil authorities as of this time.
